Giorgio Casella

Giorgio Casella (born October 23, 1847 in Castelletto sopra Ticino ; † January 18, 1929 in Lugano ) was a Swiss doctor, publicist , local historian, politician and Ticino Grand Councilor and Councilor of the Christian Democratic People's Party (CVP).

Life

Giorgio Casella was born the son of the doctor Giacomo Casella of Carona and the Giovanna Guerra. He studied in Italy and completed his medical degree in Turin in 1872 . As a community doctor in Faido , he supported the workers in building the Gotthard Railway . As a politician, he belonged to the conservative party. He was Ticino State Councilor from 1884 to 1909 and headed the Department of the Interior (with health care) and the Department of Education.

He was responsible for the creation of the Ticino Health Law of 1886 (Codice Sanitario) and promoted the creation of the cantonal psychiatric clinic (1893-1894) in Mendrisio . In 1909 he resumed his medical activities and was chief physician at the Lugano hospital for a few years. From 1913 to 1929 he was a member of the Ticino Grand Council.

He became President of the Ticino Section of the Swiss Catholic People's Association and was involved in numerous charitable institutions: Vice President of the Ticino Section of the Swiss Heritage Protection , President of the Historical and Archaeological Society of Italian Switzerland and editor of the Bollettino storico della Svizzera italiana .
