Giovanni Battista Maggi (born June 21, 1775 in Castel San Pietro ; † April 23, 1835 ibid) was a Swiss lawyer , military , politician , Ticino State Councilor and Landammann .

biography

Giovanni Battista Maggi was born as the son of the reggente of Pieve Balerna and member of the Diet Giovanni Antonio Maggi of Castel San Pietro and Rosa Monera. After his studies in law, he worked as a lawyer and notary, he was governor of the provincial governor of Mendrisio in court cases. As a leading representative of the patriots , he was President of the provisional government in Mendrisio in 1798 and was a member of the delegation that advocated the annexation of Mendrisiotto to the Cisalpine Republic in Milan .

As a military man in 1799, he became the national sub-prefect and commander of the Mendrisio Military District. After the anti-French riots of April 1799, he fled abroad and in 1800 he distinguished himself in the Battle of Marengo . He was then a member of the Ticino Grand Council from 1803 to 1834; He was Council of State from 1803 to 1811 and from 1815 to 1827. After that he was elected from 1815 to 1819 and from 1824 to 1826 as Landammann and from 1805 to 1826 sent several times to the Federal Diet.

He was one of the main opponents of the regime of Giovanni Battista Quadri , which he helped bring about by supporting the constitutional reform of 1830. In military service he was named as a colonel in 1810.
