Evaristo Garbani-Nerini

Evaristo Garbani-Nerini (born October 26, 1867 in Russo TI [today Onsernone municipality ], † February 16, 1944 in Lugano ) was a Swiss politician and free thinker . He worked as a Ticino Grand Councilor and State Councilor as well as the National Council of the Free Democratic Party (FDP). Most recently he was director of the Universal Postal Union .

Life

Evaristo Garbani-Nerini was born as the son of the merchant Carlo Antonio Garbani-Nerini and the Camilla Conelli-Isorni. He studied law at the University of Geneva .

After his return to Ticino he worked alternately as a parliamentarian, executive member and judge in his home canton. In 1893, 1897–1905 and 1913–1917 he was a radical liberal member of the Ticino Grand Council, which he presided over in 1902 and 1913. From 1893 to 1896 he was a judge at the Court of Appeal . He was elected three times to the Ticino State Council, where from 1905 to 1912 and from 1917 to 1921 he headed the departments for education, home affairs and public construction as well as finance. He was an advocate of the policy of negotiation and condemned the unwillingness to compromise, which prevented a cooperation-based government. In 1912 he resigned in protest against the rejection of the cantonal school law and in 1921 in protest because of the rejection of the budget, which the minority supported .

At the national level, he served as National Councilor from 1909 to 1922 , the last year as President of the National Council. From 1922 to 1924 he was a judge at the Swiss Federal Court in Lausanne . Finally he worked from 1925 to 1937 as director of the Universal Postal Union in Bern .
