Life

Guglielmo Canevascini was born to the farmer Ferdinando, a staunch liberal, and Giovannina Piantoni. He was self-taught and initially worked on his father's farm. At the age of 19 he emigrated to French- speaking Switzerland and later to France. In 1904 he joined the Socialist Party of Canton Ticino and worked for the daily newspaper L'Aurora , after which he was secretary of the Chamber of Labor from 1907 to 1922. The revolutionary trade unionist Giulio Barni influenced Canevascini's political consciousness. In 1913 Canevascini caused the party to split and founded the daily Libera Stampa , which he headed until 1922. After the reunification of the party in 1917, he was the undisputed leader of the Ticino socialists.

In June 1918 he led the general strike in Lugano . 1913–1917, 1921–1922 and again at the end of his political career 1959–1963 he was a member of the Grand Council and from 1919 to 1922 a National Councilor. From 1922 to 1959 he was the first socialist state councilor in Ticino. In 1940 he ran unsuccessfully as a Federal Councilor .

Canevascini, known as padreterno (God the Father), organized the fight against fascism in Ticino and also helped found groups that worked in secret, such as the storm troops of the Liberi e Svizzeri . He was one of the founding fathers of Radio Monte Ceneri , which was to become a voice of freedom and anti-fascism.
