Luigi Rossi (born June 21, 1864 in Castelrotto (municipality of Croglio ), † September 11, 1890 in Bellinzona ) was a Swiss lawyer , politician , Ticino Grand Councilor and State Councilor of the Conservative Party (CVP).

Life

Luigi Rossi was born as the son of Fortunato Rossi of Castelrotto and the Franceschina Maderni. He studied at the Rosmini College in Domodossola and at the Visitazione di Gesù College in the Principality of Monaco ; afterwards from 1883 to 1887 he studied law at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven where he obtained his doctorate. He did his internship in the law firm of Gioachimo Respini in Locarno .

In 1885 Rossi was co-founder and 1886 president of the student union Lepontia as well as an active member of the Piusverein ; from 1889 to 1890 he sat for the Conservative Party in the Ticino Grand Council and in 1890, at the age of 26, he became a State Councilor. On April 26, 1890, under the chairmanship of Gioachimo Respini, he took over the management of the justice and police departments.

During 1890 he was involved in the radical uprising of September 11, 1890 ( Ticino putsch ) against the conservative cantonal government, he was murdered on the threshold of the government building in Bellinzona. The trial of the murderer Angelo Castioni took place on July 14, 1891 in Zurich and ended with an absentee sentence of eight years in prison, which Castioni evaded in England . He was never extradited. His violent death made Luigi Rossi a conservative martyr .

His mother bequeathed her fortune to charitable causes and founded the Rossi Hospital in Capolago .
