Piusverein (Switzerland)

The Piusverein was from 1857 to 1904 an organization for the preservation of the faith and care of Catholic Science and Culture in Switzerland .

history

As early as 1853, Theodor Scherer-Boccard had referred to the German Pius Associations founded in 1848 and suggested that a similar association should also be established for Switzerland. Ultimately, in 1856 an article by an unknown author in the Schweizerische Kirchenzeitung , which has been headed by Scherer since 1855, was the decisive factor in founding the association. It took place in 1857 under the direction of Joseph Ignaz von Ah . Scherer became the first president of the Piusverein and held this office until his death in 1885. Alois Steiner writes in his publication Der Piusverein der Schweiz , in which the years from 1857 to 1870 are dealt with, that Scherer's presidency is synonymous with the association's “great years”.

The Piusverein consisted of local, district and cantonal associations. It was chaired by a ten-member Central Committee. As early as 1870, the Piusverein had around 5600 members in German-speaking Switzerland , 2000 in French- speaking Switzerland and 800 in Italian-speaking Switzerland . As an organ of the association, numerous publications with a general educational or scientific orientation appeared from 1862. In 1899 the Piusverein issued new statutes and was renamed the Swiss Catholic Association . The modernization and the newly created secretariat in Lucerne brought an upswing at the turn of the century. In 1903 the association had 35,000 members who were divided into 224 sections. At the 1st Swiss Catholic Day in 1903, the central associations decided to join forces in the Swiss Catholic People's Association (SKVV) from 1904 . The SKVV, which is only open to men, suggested the foundation of the Swiss Catholic Women's Federation (SKF) in 1912 in order to achieve a complete collection of the Catholic population.

In 1991 the SKVV changed into a development association .
