Filippo Ciani

Filippo Ciani (born July 28, 1778 in Milan , † December 12, 1867 in Lugano ) was a Swiss businessman, banker and Ticino Grand Councilor and Councilor of State .

Life

Filippo was born the son of Carlo Ciani von Leontica , merchant and banker, and Maria Zacconi. He was the brother of Giacomo Ciani . Fearing that he would be involved in the trial against Count Federico Confalonieri because of the liberal uprising of 1821, he left Italy for good in 1822. After brief stays in Switzerland and Paris, he went to London from 1823 until 1829. In 1833 he took up permanent residence in Lugano and bought a large villa on Lake Lugano (today Villa Ciani) with a park, which today forms the Parco civico .

He was one of the intellectual creators of the Italian Revolution and the Italian refugees were accepted into their home. As a politician from 1839 to 1847 , he became Ticino Grand Councilor from 1847 to 1852 Council of State , director of public education; In 1865 he donated 40,000 francs to found the cantonal prison. Lieutenant Colonel, took part in the Sonderbund campaign as cantonal quartermaster .

In 1852 he entrusted Carlo Cattaneo and Giovanni Cantoni with the project of a general reform of the higher education system. He was receptive to questions of popular education: his name is linked to countless philanthropic endeavors, from which the establishment of a kindergarten in Lugano in 1844.
