Pharyngochromis darlingi ( Syn .: Pelmatochromis darlingi , Haplochromis darlingi , Tilapia rumsay ) is a species of cichlid that occurs in the Zambezi , in the upper and middle river basins of the Save and Runde and in the Okavango in Angola, Namibia, Zambia, Botswana and Zimbabwe.

Pharyngochromis darlingi becomes 22 cm long and has a beefy cichlid shape with a relatively short head. The head profile rises more steeply than in Pharyngochromis acuticeps and is straight to slightly concave. The caudal fin is somewhat rounded or truncated. The fish are greenish-brown with eight to ten dark transverse bands on the sides of the body. With territorial or courtship males, the transverse ligaments disappear and the animals are then olive-colored with yellowish body sides and belly, dark smoke-colored throat and chest and a slightly purple shimmering back. There are rust-brown spots on the dorsal and caudal fin. The anal fin shows numerous orange egg spots.

Way of life

Pharyngochromis darlingi occurs in different bodies of water and appears to be quite adaptable. The species feeds mainly on smaller fish, as well as on aquatic insects and crustaceans. Like all Haplochromis congeners is the way a mouthbrooders . In Pharyngochromis darlingi , the female takes care of the mouthbrood . The fish breed only once a year, during the rainy season, with the peak in September. A clutch contains around 200 eggs. The Eri are first placed in a shallow pit dug by the male in the bottom of the water and then taken into the mouth by the female.
