Pharyngochromis acuticeps ( Syn .: Chromis acuticeps , Haplochromis multiocellatus ) is a species of cichlid that occurs in the upper and middle river basins of the Zambezi and Cuanza , in the Okavango , in the Kafue , in the Save and in the Kariba dam .

features

Pharyngochromis acuticeps becomes 12 to 22 cm long and has a beefy cichlid shape with a large head and mouth. The head profile is straight to slightly curved. The caudal fin is rounded. The fish are brownish with dark transverse bands on the sides of the body. The centers of the scales are reddish. The lower half of the body of the males has a greenish sheen. Their anal fin is lined with orange. It shows some yellow egg spots. In the males, the rear part of the dorsal fin and the front part of the caudal fin are dotted with reddish brown spots.

Way of life

Pharyngochromis acuticeps occurs in different bodies of water, but avoids small bodies of water and appears to be quite adaptable. The species feeds mainly on insects and crustaceans, as well as on smaller fish and fish eggs. Like all Haplochromis congeners it is a mouth-breeders . In Pharyngochromis acuticeps , the female takes care of the mouthbrood.
