The Albert Bridge is a road bridge in the Scottish city of Glasgow . In 1977 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists, initially in category B. The upgrade to the highest monument category A took place in 2004. Furthermore, the bridge together with various surrounding bridges forms a monument ensemble of category A.

history

A bridge was built at the site at the beginning of the 1830s. Robert Stevenson designed the elegant five-arched bridge. The construction work was carried out by John Steedman for a total cost of £ 48,900. Also at the instigation of Daniel Miller , this bridge was classified as unsafe in the 1860s. Presumably Miller overestimated the effects of the Clyde Depression on stability in an expert report in 1865. Although there were plans for a revision to stabilize the old bridge, the implementation of which would have been significantly cheaper, it was decided to build a new bridge.

The current Albert Bridge was built between 1868 and 1871 to a design by Bell & Miller . The company Hanna, Donald & Wilson from Paisley carried out the construction work. The total cost was £ 62,328. In the 2000s, the Albert Bridge was restored.

description

The 18.3 m wide Albert Bridge spans the Clyde on the south-east edge of the city center on Glasgow Green with three flat segment arches . While the central arch has a span of 35 m, the flanking arches are slightly shorter at 33 m. The pillars are based on cast iron cylinders. Eight wrought iron arches, which form the substructure of the bridge, rest on these . The pillars with their pointed ice breakers are covered with red granite blocks with gray caps. The spandrels of the arches are adorned with cast iron ornaments with the Glasgow city arms. The final pillars are decorated with bronze reliefs of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert .
