Pharyngochromis is a species poor in species from the family of cichlids (Cichlidae). It occurs in southern Africa in the Zambezi , the Okavango and the Save .
features
Pharyngochromis species are medium-sized cichlids and reach a maximum length of 22 cm, with males becoming larger than females. They are also more colorful, have egg spots on the anal fin and have larger fins. The head of the pharyngochromis species is large and beefy. The body is of the typical cichlid shape and somewhat flattened on the sides. It is mainly covered by round scales, there are only a few comb scales or they are only incompletely formed. Between the last five to seven scales of the upper lateral line and the base of the dorsal fin are one normal-sized and one small scale.
Way of life
Little is known about the way of life of the Pharyngochromis species. Like other haplochrominous cichlids , they are ovophilic mouthbrooders .
