Ovophile

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As ovophil ( lat. Ovum , Ei 'and Alt Gr. Φιλία philia , Friendship') are fish referred to in which the female to spawn during the Balz on a substrate deposits, the eggs , however, relatively quickly with the mouth resumes. There are also fish with ovophilic males such as the Banggai cardinalfish ( Pterapogon kauderni ).

The male uses the time between laying and picking up the eggs to inseminate the clutch.

In the case of Geophagus altifrons, for example, the female also often sucks off the clutch and the substrate, whereby sperm gets into the mouth filled with the eggs and these are fertilized there.
