Johann Baptista Bavier

Johann Baptista Bavier (born September 3, 1795 in Chur , † September 19, 1856 in Zurich ) was a Swiss politician and banker . From 1848 until his death he was a member of the National Council. He was the father of Simeon Bavier and a cousin of Wilhelm Matthias Naeff (both federal councilors ).

biography

Bavier came from an influential banking and merchant family who had always been represented on the Chur city council since the late 16th century and played an important role in the institutions of the Three Leagues . He attended the community school in Altstätten and the canton school in Aarau , after which he trained as a businessman. In 1825 he took over the management of the Bavier bank in Chur, which was heavily involved in the transalpine forwarding business. He was married to Katharina Roffler from Fideris , daughter of the Landammann of the Ten Court Association Valentin Roffler.

From 1819 Bavier held numerous offices in city committees. From 1826 to 1847 he sat on the Grand Council . In 1830 and 1835 he represented the Three Leagues as delegate from the Diet , and as President of the Association of Churches he was represented in the Small Council in 1838/39 . Bavier ran in the first National Council elections in 1848 and was elected member of the constituency of Graubünden-Mitte . He was a moderate liberal, but did not join the free-thinking faction, but the conservatives.
