Portrait of Melchior Wyrsch

Melchior Wyrsch (born February 27, 1817 in Buochs ; † May 30, 1873 there ) was a Swiss politician and doctor . From 1848 to 1851 and from 1854 to 1857 he was a member of the National Council.

biography

The son of a farmer received his high school education at the Engelberg convent school . He then studied medicine at the Universities of Munich and Würzburg . From 1842 Wyrsch worked as a doctor in Buochs. As a leading member of the "reaction party" he submitted a petition in 1849 calling for a revision of the canton's constitution in the Catholic-conservative sense. The new constitution of 1850, on which he had worked on the Constitutional Council, largely met these requirements and showed an insufficient separation of powers.

Wyrsch ran in the National Council elections in October 1848 and was elected by the Landsgemeinde as the first Nidwalden National Council. From 1850 to 1856 he was a member of the government council as state governor. In 1851 Wyrsch renounced his re-election as a national councilor, three years later he was elected again. In 1857 he was defeated by the liberal candidate Melchior Joller .
