Melchior Joller (born January 1, 1818 in Stans , † November 9, 1865 in Rome ) was a Swiss publicist and politician .

Life

Melchior Joller was born on January 1, 1818, the son of the farmer and Catholic church mayer Jakob Joller; his grandmother was Veronika Gut . His hometown was Dallenwil . In 1842 he married Karoline Wenz, daughter of Bernhart Wenz, who worked as a clerk in Freiburg im Breisgau . This marriage resulted in seven children, including Alfred Joller .

From 1841 onwards he worked as an advocate in Stans and represented liberal politics. In 1845 he took over his parents' farm in Stans. In 1844 he was a co-founder of the "Nidwalden Wochenblatt", which was banned after the 13th edition at the urging of the clergy. After the defeat of the Sonderbund , he was able to publish the weekly newspaper again from 1848 to 1857. In the parliamentary elections in 1857 he was surprisingly elected to the National Council, but failed to get re-elected in 1860. Because of the mysterious apparitions in his house, which he described in his published diary, he left Stans in 1862 to move to Rome via Zurich in 1865. There he died on November 9, 1865, disaffected and impoverished.

Haunted story

Joller became known through his diary about alleged mysterious experiences of ghosts and spooks in his house from mid-August 1862. The incidents in the house where Joller was born and grew up have not been scientifically clarified to this day. Because of the frightening incidents and the uproar they caused, Joller moved with his family first to Zurich, and later to Rome. After Joller's move, the house is said to have remained quiet.

In 2003 , Volker Anding made a film about The Haunted House of Stans , which takes Joller's allegations as a starting point and tries to clarify what was actually going on in Joller's house. The show across Switzerland , which was shown on 3sat on December 3, 2004, also focused on Stans' haunted house. The Jollerhaus was demolished in February 2010.
