biography

The son of a councilor and judge embarked on a career as a banker. As an interest collector, he was involved in various capital transactions, later he was a partner in the finance company Diethelm, Steinegger & Co. In 1841, Steinegger was one of the founders of the Sparkasse der March , the first private financial institution in the March district of the canton of Schwyz . From 1832 to 1835 he served as the district's land clerk, from 1834 to 1848 as a district councilor and councilor for Altendorf (from 1846 as councilor ).

In 1838 a dispute between small and large cattle owners (“claw men” or “horn men”) escalated within the Oberallmeind Corporation. Despite his Catholic-conservative attitude, Steinegger showed great commitment to the concerns of the progressive-minded Klauen party. The Landsgemeinde on May 6th in Rothenthurm degenerated into such a wild mass brawl that the Diet had to intervene arbitrarily. In the repetition of the Landsgemeinde, the horn party prevailed in the "horns and claws dispute". Because of his partisanship, it took nine years for Steinegger to gain a foothold in cantonal politics (election to the Cantonal Council in 1847 ).

In 1848, Steinegger was the canton of Schwyz's delegate to the Diet. In the same year he was elected to the government council, to which he belonged until 1860 and again from 1862 until his death; in the years 1864 to 1866 he was Landammann . Steinegger ran successfully in the first parliamentary elections in October 1848 . In 1854 he was voted out of office as a national councilor. The Great Council elected him in 1858 as one of the two Schwyz representatives in the Council of States , of which he was a member for nine years.
