Karl Ferdinand Schimpf

Karl Ferdinand Schimpf (born October 12, 1806 in Laufenburg , † January 10, 1868 in Basel ; resident in Laufenburg) was a Swiss politician and judge . From 1848 to 1852 he was a member of the National Council , then until 1859 a member of the canton of Aargau .

biography

Schimpf attended the schools in Laufenburg and from 1823 to 1825 the "Lehrverein", a private educational institute in Aarau . He then began to study law at the University of Freiburg , but soon had to drop out due to illness and lack of money. He earned his living as a clerk at the district court of Laufenburg and later as Laufenburg city clerk. With the financial support of the Aarau lawyer Rudolf Feer, he resumed his studies at the University of Tübingen in 1838 and completed it with a doctorate.

In 1840 Schimpf began working as a lawyer. The following year he was appointed district judge, in 1842 president of the district court in Laufenburg and in 1849 district magistrate. From 1842 he was a member of the Grand Council , from 1849 to 1851 of the Constitutional Council. Schimpf ran for the first parliamentary elections in 1848 and represented Aargau in the National Council until 1852 . Thereupon the Grand Council elected him to the cantonal government in 1852, in which he successively headed the Department of the Interior, the Finance Department and the Police Department.

In 1854, Schimpf became Vice President of the Aargauische Bank, the predecessor of today's Cantonal Bank , and two years later battalion commander of the Landwehr . In 1859 he resigned from the government and moved to Basel , where he headed the management of the 1st customs district until his death.
