Johann Georg Kreis (born September 2, 1803 in Zihlschlacht ; † May 24, 1863 ibid) was a liberal Swiss politician and judge . From 1848 until his death he was a member of the National Council.

biography

The son of the bailiff and canvas dealer Johann Ulrich Kreis attended the academy in Lausanne , where he also completed a commercial apprenticeship. He then worked as a merchant in Trieste . From there he traveled to Italy , Southeast Europe and the Middle East . In 1826, Kreis returned to his homeland and took over his father's business. From 1831 he was a member and from 1840 President of the District Court of Bischofszell . From 1841 to 1853 he was a judge at the Thurgau criminal court (the last two years as its president). In addition, he worked from 1833 as a member of the reformed marriage court and from 1840 as president of the reformed church council of the canton of Thurgau.

Kreis' political career began in 1826 with the election to the Grand Council of the Canton of Thurgau. He belonged to this without interruption for almost four decades until his death. Due to his business relationships and his friendship with Johann Konrad Kern , he was able to exert a great influence on cantonal politics. Between 1840 and 1846 he represented Thurgau four times as envoy to the Diet . Kreis ran successfully in the first National Council elections in 1848 . He was then re-elected four times in a row.
