Alexander Ludwig Funk (born February 19, 1806 in Nidau ; † November 26, 1871 there ) was a Swiss politician and judge . From 1848 to 1851 he was a member of the National Council, from 1846 to 1850 he was a member of the government of the Canton of Bern .

biography

The son of a reformed pastor received his legal training from 1826 at the academy in Bern . From 1829 the member of the Zofingia , worked in Nidau ​​as a lawyer and notary , in addition he held various offices in the judiciary and in administration. After the establishment of the municipality Nidau in 1832 officiated radio for five years as its first mayor . In 1838 he was appointed court president of the Signau district. From 1841 to 1844 he was Procurator in Biel , then until 1846 President of the Bern Higher Court .

Funk represented radical liberal views and was elected to the Grand Council of the Canton of Bern in 1839 and was Bernese Landammann (Grand Council President) from 1844 to 1846. In 1844/45 he took part in the free marches to Lucerne . After the radicals had forced the drafting of a new cantonal constitution in 1846, Funk presided over the constitutional council . In the same year he was elected to the government council , in 1848 he was the last president of the Diet . In this function he signed the Federal Constitution of the Swiss Confederation on September 14, 1848 together with the Chancellor of the Confederation Johann Ulrich Schiess .

In October 1848 he ran in the first national council elections . He was elected to the constituencies of Emmental and Zealand at the same time , whereupon he opted for the mandate in Emmental. Three years later he waived re-election.

Funk had the rank of colonel in the military and was a member of the general staff from 1847 to 1867 . In 1850 he resigned as a councilor and returned to the Grand Council for the next two years. From 1852 to 1862 he was the district procurator of the Seeland and city ​​clerk of Biel, then until 1870 as governor in Nidau. Funk gradually turned to the conservatives over the years. For this he sat again in the Grand Council in 1870/71.

Funk was "comrade-in-arms" of Ulrich Ochsenbein and Johann Rudolf Schneider . He was considered one of the leading personalities of the Sonderbund period .
