Johann Schneider (born April 13, 1792 in Langnau im Emmental ; † January 2, 1858 there ) was a Swiss politician . From 1831 to 1848 he was a member of the government of the Canton of Bern , after which he was a member of the National Council until 1850 .

biography

The son of a doctor received his education in the institute of Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi in Yverdon and in Naples . From 1814 Schneider worked as a teacher in Yverdon, and in 1817 he opened his own educational institution in Langnau in the Emmental. When the radical liberals came to power in the canton of Bern in 1831, he was involved in drafting a new cantonal constitution as a constitutional councilor . In the same year he was elected to the Grand Council , of which he was a member until 1846. The Grand Council in turn immediately elected him to the government council .

In the cantonal government, Schneider was responsible for the education department due to his previous experience. During his term of office, which lasted until 1848, a comprehensive reform of the Bern education system took place. This included the establishment of the University of Bern in 1834 and the Primary School Act of 1835. In 1833 he also founded the Association for Christian National Education. In view of his moderately liberal stance, the radicals increasingly turned away from him. Without their support, he ran in the first National Council elections in October 1848 and was elected in the Emmental constituency in the third ballot. In the spring of 1850 he resigned and was then governor of the Signau district until 1854 .
