Louis Bochardt (born April 2, 1770 ; † unknown) as Simon Joseph Bochardt (Jewish), later converted to the Christian faith under the name of Philipp Ludwig Bochardt , was a German doctor and surgeon who campaigned for the health protection of workers who came into contact with lead compounds. To this end, he wrote several papers and invented aids for occupational safety.

Life

Bochardt's family came from Neumark in the former Prussian province of Mark Brandenburg ( administrative district Frankfurt , Oder ).

In 1793 Bochardt enrolled at the medical faculty of the University of Göttingen . After graduating, he worked as a doctor and surgeon in Lehrensteinsfeld . He was probably a member of the local Jewish community . On April 3, 1800 he converted from the Jewish to the Protestant faith in Heilbronn and took Christian first names.

Create

Among other things, Bochardt took care of cases of illness from the Heilbronn company Georg Friedrich Rund , which had been producing white lead since 1801 and also produced lead sugar since 1807 . The owners of the factory were the Mertz and Orth families , the factory area was on the Heilbronner Rosenberg , the mill required for production was on the Hefenweiler . This company employed 50 to 60 workers. In 1811 Bochardt had received an order for this care and was "the first" to develop a special respiratory mask to protect workers from inhaling and swallowing lead dust and thus from lead poisoning .

The physician and writer Justinus Kerner mentions Bochardt in one of his works.

The homeopath Johann Ernst Stapf also mentions Bochardt's work, which can be found in the general medical annals of the year 1827 in the March issue under the heading Articles on Disease Aetiology (pages 290 to 295) and ascribes "very noteworthy comments" to him.
