biography

Philipp Anton von Segesser was the eldest son of Franz Ludwig Segesser von Brunegg (1776–1843) and Maria Anna geb. Schumacher (1794-1850). After completing high school in Lucerne, he went on to study law and history in Heidelberg, Bonn, Berlin and Munich. Back in Lucerne he was a council clerk from 1841 to 1847; During the Sonderbund War , in 1847, he acted as head of the operations office of the Chief of Staff von Elgger. In the first parliamentary elections he was elected a member of the Swiss National Council, to which he belonged until his death. From 1851 to 1860 and between 1861 and 1888 he was a member of the Grand Council of Lucerne, from 1863 to 1867 and from 1871 to 1888 government councilor of the canton of Lucerne and in 1872, 1876 and 1884 Schultheiss . In 1875 he ran unsuccessfully as a Federal Councilor .

He married Josefine Göldlin von Tiefenau (1814–1891), daughter of Johann Ludwig, royal Dutch major general, and Anna Maria geb. Achermann from Ennerberg.

As a National Councilor, Segesser made a significant contribution to the integration of the federally oriented Catholic cantons into the new federal state and, as a member of the government, assumed the undisputed leadership role in his home canton until his death. Through his realpolitical stance and his mediating position, he succeeded in largely keeping the canton of Lucerne out of the turmoil of the Kulturkampf . Segesser also earned merit as a historian. He wrote several fundamental studies on the history of the State of Lucerne and, as the editor of four volumes, was also involved in the publication of the Federal Farewells .
