Oberstoppel is a district of the market town of Haunetal in the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district in East Hesse .

geography

Oberstoppel lies between Bad Hersfeld and Fulda below the 524 meter high stubble mountain . The neighboring town of Unterstoppel is about one kilometer as the crow flies .

history

In 1241 the two places were first mentioned under the name "Stupfele". It was not until 1402 that the two places were distinguished as "Oberstoppfel" and "Niederstoppfel". Oberstoppel belonged to the district of Hersfeld as a result of the Kurhessian district division. However, in 1861 it was attached to the Hünfeld district.

The Evangelical Church of Oberstoppel, to which Unterstoppel also belongs, is a baroque building from the years 1754 to 1756.

On February 1, 1971, as part of the regional reform in Hesse, the place that was then part of the Hünfeld district was incorporated into the newly formed community of Haunetal.

Attractions

Long stones

The nearby ruins of Hauneck Castle on the summit of the adjacent stubble mountain , the long stones and the “Oberstoppel stone cross” are well worth seeing . This stone cross is probably a memorial from the 15th century, which was erected in honor of the then Count of the Neukirchen Court and the church mayor of Unterstoppel. In the village there is a restaurant, a holiday and guest house with an offer for children's camps and school trips and a human-animal meeting place with therapeutic riding and animal-assisted support measures.
