biography

The son of a wealthy farmer attended the community school of Klosters and probably the Protestant canton school in Chur . He studied law and political science at the University of Berlin and then worked as a lawyer in Klosters . Brosi gained his first political experience as Landammann of the district of Klosters . In 1841 he married Maria Roffler, the daughter of the state administrator of the Ten Courts Federation . He moved to Schiers and a little later gave up his law firm in favor of politics, as the extensive property enabled him to earn a considerable income.

Like his father-in-law before him, Brosi served as state administrator of the Ten Courts Federation. As such, he was an ex officio member of the cantonal government in 1833, 1836, 1841, 1844, 1846 and 1848 . Between 1830 and 1846 he represented the canton of Graubünden six times as envoy to the Diet . As a radical liberal politician, Brosi was a founding member of the Reform Association in 1841, which sought a new cantonal constitution. This project was finally implemented in 1854. He was a member of the Grand Council (which he presided over several times) from 1848 to 1851, 1854 to 1863 and 1865 to 1869.

The Grand Council elected Brosi as one of the Grisons representatives in the Council of States for the years 1848/49 . In November 1849 he ran a by-election in the constituency of Graubünden-Nord and entered the National Council . He led the negotiations to replace the cantonal customs duties. Since the outcome of the negotiations was perceived as unsatisfactory in large parts of the canton, he was not re-elected in 1851. He tried four more times to be elected to the National Council, each time unsuccessfully. From 1848 to 1859 Brosi was a federal judge , and in 1856/57 he was a member of the Council of States for the second time. Finally in 1863 he officiated as mayor of Schiers.
