Johann Georg Anderegg (born July 8, 1792 in Winterthur ; † May 21, 1856 in Wattwil ) was a Swiss politician and industrialist . From 1848 until his death he was a member of the National Council.

Life

The son of the Toggenburg merchant and cotton publisher Tobias Anderegg received his education at private institutes in Zurich and Neuchâtel . He then completed a commercial apprenticeship in his father's cotton factory in Wattwil. He settled in St. Gallen to trade in the family's own products. When the father went blind in 1820, Johann Georg Anderegg and his five years younger brother Friedrich ran the company independently. In the 1830s they began exporting to North America and Brazil . In the last years of his life, Anderegg switched from pure cloth production to the final manufacture of clothing. In its heyday, the Anderegg company, which was one of the leading companies in Toggenburg, employed around 1,000 workers.

Anderegg's political career began in 1830 when he was elected to the Constitutional Council. From 1831 to 1833 and from 1835 to 1847 he was a member of the Grand Council of the Canton of St. Gallen . He represented old liberal views. In the military he last held the rank of lieutenant colonel in the cavalry. Anderegg ran in the first National Council elections in October 1848 and was elected in the constituency of St. Gallen-Northwest . One of his main concerns was the freedom to design customs legislation as freely as possible. He was also often called in as an expert on trade and military issues.

His nephew Georg Friedrich Anderegg was later also represented in the National Council.
