Johann Jakob Sutter
Johann Jakob Sutter (born April 12, 1812 in Bühler ; † November 27, 1865 there ) was a Swiss politician and businessman . From 1848 to 1853 he was a member of the National Council, from 1859 until his death in the Council of States .
biography
The son of a farmer received his education at a private school, the city school in Geneva and an institute in Neuchâtel . He was financed by his brother Johann Ulrich Sutter, who was twenty years his senior and was a successful textile entrepreneur. Sutter initially worked for his brother's company until he founded his own manufacturing business for fine embroidery . He was a representative of free-thinking radicalism and was considered an ambitious personality with authoritarian features.
From 1837 to 1845 Sutter was a member of the Small Council of the Canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden , after which he officiated as the mayor of Bühler. In the first national elections in October 1848, he was elected to the National Council. He belonged to this until 1853, then again to the cantonal government until 1864. From 1858 to 1862 he chaired the commission that worked out the total revision of the cantonal constitution. In 1859 he was elected to the Council of States, to which he belonged until his death.
