Michael August Wegelin

Michael August Wegelin (born June 17, 1797 in St. Gallen ; † February 8, 1867 there ) was a Swiss lawyer and politician.

Michael August Wegelin was born as the son of the St. Gallen merchant and municipal councilor Christoph Wegelin and the Catharina born Girtanner. His brother was the theologian and archivist Karl Wegelin (1803-1858). In 1829 he married Anna Maria Zollikofer, daughter of the St. Gallen politician Johann Jakob Zolliker (1775–1854).

biography

Wegelin studied law and political science at the universities of Tübingen and Heidelberg . In 1816 he became a member of the Corps Helvetia Tübingen. After completing his studies, he established himself as a lawyer in St. Gallen. As a liberal-conservative politician, he was St. Gallen Cantonal Councilor from 1833 to 1845 and St. Gallen Cantonal Judge from 1838 to 1848. In the years 1835, 1841 and 1842 he was envoy to the Federal Diet . In 1845 he was no longer elected to the Cantonal Council by the city of St. Gallen.
