National Council constituency of Graubünden-East
The National Council constituency of Graubünden-Ost was a constituency in elections to the Swiss National Council . It existed from 1848 to 1902 and covered the eastern part of the canton of Graubünden .
Electoral process
This constituency was a singles constituency. This means that only 1 seat was available and the pure majority suffrage was used. Each voter had one vote.
designation
Graubünden-Ost is an unofficial geographical name. In official use, consecutive numbering applied across the whole of Switzerland, arranged according to the order of the cantons in the Swiss Federal Constitution, was common . Due to the changing number over the years, some constituencies were given a new number several times. Graubünden-Ost bore the number 33 from 1851 (first application of a uniform federal law), number 32 from 1863, number 33 from 1872, number 34 from 1881 and number 36 from 1890.
expansion
The area of the constituency was made binding for the first time on December 21, 1850 with the "Federal Act on the Election of Members of the National Council", whereby the fourth constituency created by the Graubünden cantonal government in 1848 was taken over unchanged. It comprised:
- in the Albula district the districts Alvaschein , Bergün and Surses
- the Bernina district
- the district of Inn
- the Maloja district
- the Val Müstair district
The only change in area came about with the "Supplementary Law on Elections to the National Council" of July 23, 1863. The Alvaschein and Surses districts were ceded to the Graubünden-North constituency . From now on, Graubünden East comprised:
- Bergün district in the Albula district
- the Bernina district
- the district of Inn
- the Maloja district
- the Val Müstair district
In 1902 the three Graubünden constituencies were amalgamated to form the Graubünden National Council constituency, which still exists today , in which proportional representation has been in force since 1919.
