The district Alvaschein made until 31 December 2015 together with the circles Belfort , Bergün and Surses the District Albula of the Swiss canton of Grisons . The seat of the district office was in Tiefencastel . The districts were abolished by the Graubünden regional reform.

Population and language
The Alvaschein district has 3320 inhabitants (December 2009). In terms of inhabitants, the district is dominated by the municipality of Vaz / Obervaz with its districts Lenzerheide and Valbella .
According to the 2000 census, 76.7% of the population speak German and 15.5% speak Romansh. With the exception of Mutten, all municipalities have Romansh roots. The Romansh portion is very different in the communities today. Stierva and Mon are still predominantly Romansh-speaking with 66.4% and 52.3% respectively. In the other communities, however, German-speaking predominates.
geography
The Alvaschein district extends over the anterior Albula valley. The two villages of Tiefencastel and Alvaschein are located in the valley basin. Mon, Stierva and Mutten are located on the terraces on the left slope of the valley, facing north-east. Vaz / Obervaz is located on the right slope of the valley and the two fractions Lenzerheide and Valbella extend over a high plateau north of Vaz / Obervaz.
Economy and tourism
Of the around 2,152 employees, 70.2% work in the service sector. 20.4% work in the manufacturing sector and only 9.4% in agriculture and forestry. (December 2005)
The Alvaschein district is mainly characterized by tourism. The most famous tourist destination is Lenzerheide. With around 220,000 overnight stays per year, the Lenzerheide / Valbella holiday destination is one of the largest in Graubünden.
