Andreas Rudolf von Planta (born April 24, 1819 in Samedan ; † April 19, 1889 in Zurich ) was a Swiss lawyer , entrepreneur and politician .

biography

He came from the Upper Engadine Uradelsgeschlecht those of Planta . Andreas Rudolf von Planta received his school education in Switzerland and Germany. He attended the village school in Samedan, the high alpine institute Ftan , the Bündner Kantonsschule in Chur as well as the grammar school Philippinum Weilburg and the Goetheschule Wetzlar . He then studied law and economics at the Universities of Zurich , Heidelberg and Berlin . In Heidelberg he became a member of the Corps Helvetia in 1839 . After receiving his doctorate in Heidelberg in 1842 and a stay at the Geneva Academy , he returned to his home in the Engadine in 1843.

Von Planta owned goods in the canton of Thurgau and across the entire canton of Graubünden and had various industrial holdings. In 1850 he was one of the founders of the newspaper Der Bund . He was also involved in founding the thermal baths of St. Moritz , Tarasp and Bormio . In 1856 he bought Tarasp Castle for 1,100 francs. From 1858 to 1864 he was chairman of the board of directors of the Heilquelle of St. Moritz corporation.

He began his political career in 1844 as federal governor. In the same year he became a member of the Grand Council of the Canton of Graubünden, to which he belonged with interruptions until 1877. From 1849 to 1852 he was President of the Maloja District Court . From 1848 to 1869 and from 1876 to 1881 he was a member of the National Council . In 1865 and 1866 he was President of the National Council.

Von Planta was involved in transport and agricultural policy, particularly advocating the economic development of the Engadine through the expansion of tourism and the construction of the Eastern Alpine Railway. He was a champion of the correction of the Rhine and the utilization of hydropower in Graubünden. The Bündner Settlement Act of 1874 was largely due to him. He was a liberal federalist and representative of the referendum democracy and rejected the constitutional reform of 1872.

He was President of the Natural Research Society of Graubünden and a founding member of the Rhaetian Museum . In the Swiss Army he was a major in the general staff .
