Cyprien Revel

Cyprien Revel (born June 21, 1805 in La Neuveville ; † August 24, 1886 ibid) was a Swiss politician and judge . From 1848 to 1851 and 1854 to 1869 he was a member of the National Council, and from 1846 to 1850 he was a member of the government of the Canton of Bern .

biography

Revel's family originally came from the Waldensian valleys in Piedmont ; his father owned a boarding school. Revel first studied humanities at the University of Bern , then law in Paris . The member of Zofingia presided over the district court of the La Neuveville district from 1838 . In 1842 he founded an orphanage in Courtelary . Revel represented radical liberal views and was elected to the Grand Council of the Canton of Bern in 1843 . In 1846 he was a member of the constituent assembly and, as a French-speaking secretary, played a key role in drafting a new cantonal constitution.

Revel was elected to the Bern government council in 1846. He lost his government mandate four years later when the Conservatives gained a majority. On the other hand, he moved back into the Grand Council, to which he belonged until 1866. Revel ran in October 1848 in the first National Council elections and was elected in the constituency of Jura . He was voted out of office three years later, but won his seat back in the National Council elections in 1857 . As a result, he was re-elected three more times until he finally resigned in 1869. Revel campaigned for railroad construction in the Jura and also wrote several treatises on local history.
