Swiss parliamentary elections 1983
The Swiss parliamentary elections in 1983 took place on October 23, 1983. The 200 mandates of the National Council and 38 of the 46 mandates in the Council of States were to be newly awarded. This 42nd legislative period lasted four years until October 1987.
There were 1,880 candidacies (1,446 men and 434 women) for the 200 mandates of the National Council. As a result, there were only moderate shifts: the Social Democratic Party lost again, and for the first time since 1928 achieved fewer votes than the FDP , which was able to win four seats despite a slight loss of votes. Among the smaller groups, the two far-right parties NA and Vigilance recorded significant gains. The Soviet Communist Party of Labor , on the other hand, suffered losses and could only have a single National Council.
With a view to the National Council elections, two national Green parties had formed for the first time. The successes of these were varied: while the Federation of Swiss Green Parties (later the Swiss Green Party ) won three seats (plus two), the Green Alternative came away empty-handed.
The FDP also won in the Council of States: it gained 3 seats, while the Social Democrats lost just as many. However, this essentially reversed the result of the previous elections - the composition of the small chamber again corresponded to what was customary in the post-war period.
The turnout in the National Council elections in 1983 reached 48.91%, a slightly higher value than in 1979. However, it fell even further in subsequent elections and reached its temporary low in 1995 at 42.22%.
Election mode
National Council
The national councils have been elected according to the proportional representation system since 1919 . H. the seats are distributed in the individual cantons according to the proportion of voters on the party lists and only within the list according to the individual votes. The number of seats per canton is determined based on the number of inhabitants.

Council of States
Every canton has elected two representatives for the Council of States since 1848 (former half-cantons : one representative). The elections to the Council of States are based on cantonal law. In most of the cantons, the cantons were also elected on October 23. There were several second ballots. In the cantons of Appenzell Innerrhoden , Glarus , Nidwalden and Obwalden , the municipalities elected the Council of States. The cantons of Graubünden (electoral period from 1982 to 1986) and Zug (1982–1986) had different election dates.

Political groups are associations of one or more parties. Only parliamentary groups have members in the commissions of the National Council or Council of States. At least 5 mandates are required to form a parliamentary group. Non-attached, however, do not have a seat in these commissions.
