Esther Bührer (born March 30, 1926 in Schaffhausen ; † August 1, 2020 there ) was a Swiss politician ( SP ). She became the first woman from the canton of Schaffhausen to join the Council of States in 1979 and held her position as Council of States until 1991.

Life

After the teachers' seminar in Schaffhausen and the secondary teacher studies at the University of Zurich , Esther Bührer worked as a primary school teacher in Schaffhausen from 1950 to 1954. She then taught for three years at the Swiss school in Bogotá . In 1970 she resumed her professional activity as a secondary school teacher in Schaffhausen.

She was married and had two sons. She died in Schaffhausen at the beginning of August 2020 at the age of 94.

Political career

As a teller in the Council of States

At the beginning of the 1970s, she began to become more and more politically active. From 1973 to 1992 she represented the Social Democratic Party (SP) in the Cantonal Council of Schaffhausen, which she presided over in 1978 as the first woman. From 1979 to 1991 she represented the Canton of Schaffhausen as a Councilor of States in Bern .
