Otto Piller (born June 26, 1942 in Alterswil ) is a Swiss politician ( SP ) and former chief official in the federal administration .

Life

Piller grew up in a large working-class and smallholder family in Alterswil and did an apprenticeship as a measurement technician . He then studied electronics at the Burgdorf Technical Center and mathematics and physics at the University of Freiburg , where he received his doctorate in the field of nuclear physics .

From 1972 he worked for the Federal Office for Metrology (today the Federal Institute for Metrology ), which he headed from 1984 to 1996 as director. From 1997 to 2003 he was director of the Federal Social Insurance Office .

From 2004 to 2010 he was President of the Swiss Lung League .

politics

In addition to his work in the federal administration, he was politically active for the SP: from 1976 to 1979 he was a councilor in the canton of Friborg and from 1978 to 1983 municipal council in his place of residence, Alterswil . From 1979 to 1995 he represented Freiburg in the Council of States , which he presided over in 1992/1993.

In the 1995 Federal Council election, Piller was one of the party's official candidates to succeed Otto Stich , but lost to Moritz Leuenberger in the fifth ballot .
