Federal Council election 1995 (replacement election)
On September 27, 1995, a replacement election for the Federal Council took place in Switzerland .
The replacement election was made necessary by the resignation of Federal Councilor Otto Stich ( SP ). He mainly justified his resignation with his age. He later admitted that there was a connection with a defeat in the Federal Council in the decision to build the NEAT with the Lötschberg base tunnel .
The SP, which was entitled to the seat according to the magic formula , nominated two men for election: Otto Piller (Freiburg) and Moritz Leuenberger (Zurich). Strong forces in the FDP faction wanted to break the magic formula and demanded an FDP candidacy. Vreni Spoerry would have made himself available for this. However, after a tight parliamentary group decision, no candidacy was made. The SVP and the CVP have announced that they will not question the concordance and will elect an SP candidate.
The SP members Eduard Belser and Gret Haller were not official candidates either. Since the SP was already represented by a woman in the Federal Council with Ruth Dreifuss , the gender issue hardly played a role.
