Verena Spoerry-Toneatti (born March 8, 1938 in Zurich ; legal resident in Fischenthal ) is a Swiss politician . She belongs to the Free Democratic Party (FDP).

biography

Spoerry grew up in Rapperswil SG . After the trade matura she studied law and graduated with a licentiate from. She is married and has three children.

Spoerry is President of the Board of Trustees of “Esprix” (a foundation that recognizes entrepreneurial achievements) and President of the Board of Trustees of the Kaspar Spoerry Foundation (a foundation for the promotion of sporting activities for the disabled). She was also President of the Swiss Energy Forum from 1992 to 2004.

From 1986 Spoerry was a long-time member of the board of directors at Schweizerische Kreditanstalt (SKA) and Credit Suisse (CS), from 1992 to 2004 at Nestlé and from 1998 to 2001 board member at Swissair . From 1999 to 2010 she was Vice President of the Board of Directors of the SV Group . She was also a member and vice-president of the Zurich Chamber of Commerce from 1985 to 2004 .

Before her political career at national level, Spoerry was a local councilor (1978 to 1986) of Horgen and a cantonal councilor (1979 to 1983). From 1983 to 1996 she was a member of the Swiss National Council and from 1996 to 2003 the Council of States .

In the Council of States she sat in the commissions for legal issues (1995/96), social security and health (1997–2003), the environment, spatial planning and energy (1996–2003), economy and taxes (1996–2003) and the state political commission (1996 -1999).

Acquittal in the Swissair trial

In March 2006, the public prosecutor of the Canton of Zurich brought charges against Spoerry and 18 other people in connection with the Swissair bankruptcy. She was a board member of the airline. She was accused of damage to creditors and multiple unfaithful business management. Like all the other 18 accused, she was acquitted. She received litigation compensation in the amount of 187,829 francs. The prosecution did not advance the verdict; thus the acquittal is final.
