Resigned: Kurt Furgler and Alphons Egli

In the Swiss Federal Council elections in 1986 , the United Federal Assembly elected Flavio Cotti and Arnold Koller (both CVP ) as new members of the Swiss Federal Council in two replacement elections on December 10, 1986 . They took over the seats of the resigning Federal Councilors Alphons Egli and Kurt Furgler (both CVP).

Starting position

The candidates Koller and Cotti entered the race as favorites. The prospects of Judith Stamm (CVP) to move into the Federal Council as the second woman alongside Elisabeth Kopp were rated as very low.

The vote

As expected, the favorites Koller and Cotti were each elected with a clear majority in the first ballot.
