Federal Council election 1987
On December 9, 1987, the general election of the Federal Council took place in Switzerland . The two chambers of the newly elected parliament, the United Federal Assembly , elected the Swiss government, the Bundesrat , for a term of office from 1988 to 1991. The seats were ordered individually in the order of the age of office of the seat holder.

Sixth election (replacement of Pierre Aubert, SP)
Federal Councilor Pierre Aubert ( SP ) has been Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) since 1978 . Since he had announced his resignation on December 31, 1987, a replacement election for his seat was necessary. According to the magic formula, the SP raised a claim to this seat, which was not disputed. The Social Democratic candidate, René Felber , was elected in the 1st ballot and took over the department from Aubert.

Seventh election (replacement election of Leon Schlumpf, SVP)
Federal Councilor Leon Schlumpf ( SVP ) has been Head of the Federal Transport and Energy Department (EVED) since 1980 . Since he had announced his resignation on December 31, 1987, a replacement election for his seat was necessary. The right to a seat of the SVP (which until 2003 only had its seat according to the magic formula) was not questioned.
The SVP candidate, Adolf Ogi , was elected in the second ballot and took over the department from Leon Schlumpf.

Election of the Federal Chancellor
The incumbent Chancellor Walter Buser ran for re-election and was confirmed in office with 212 votes.
Election of the Federal President
Otto Stich was elected Federal President for 1988 with 165 votes , Jean-Pascal Delamuraz was elected Vice President with 157 votes.
