Federal Council election 2002
In the Federal election in 2002 was on 4 December 2002 in a by-election Micheline Calmy-Rey ( SP ) of the Federal Assembly as the successor to the retired Ruth Dreifuss (SP) in the Swiss Federal Council selected.
Strategies of the parties
- SP : The SP parliamentary group had nominated two official candidates: the Geneva State Councilor Micheline Calmy-Rey and the Freiburg State Councilor Ruth Lüthi . The Ticino State Councilor Patrizia Pesenti , the Geneva National Councilor Liliane Maury Pasquier and the Neuchâtel Council of States Jean Studer were not considered .
- SVP : Although the SP was entitled to two Federal Council seats according to the magic formula , the SVP claimed a second seat at its own expense and nominated the Zurich National Councilor Toni Bortoluzzi as a candidate. She announced that in the event that Toni Bortoluzzi falls out of the race prematurely, she will be empty.
- CVP , FDP , Greens : The parliamentary groups of the CVP , the FDP and the Greens had decided to allow votes. They described both SP candidates as competent and eligible.
Given this situation, an open race between Micheline Calmy-Rey and Ruth Lüthi was expected, while the explosive candidacy of Toni Bortoluzzi was considered a chance.
