In the Federal Council election in 2002 , he ran unsuccessfully as SVP's demolition candidate to succeed Ruth Dreifuss . He also ran unsuccessfully in early 2005 in the replacement elections to the Zurich government council . After he had lagged significantly behind his competitor Hans Hollenstein ( CVP ) in the first ballot due to a lack of support from the FDP , he withdrew his candidacy. Despite his Italian parents, Bortoluzzi pursues a decidedly right-wing conservative policy on foreigners. Bortoluzzi was one of the few secondos in the Swiss federal parliament. His main focus was on social, family and health policy. In June 2014, Bortoluzzi labeled gays, lesbians, singles, and people with multiple partnerships as “misguided” and unnatural.

Until the end of June 2012, he ran a carpentry shop with six employees in Affoltern am Albis. Even if he has been called a master carpenter in election campaigns , he does not have the master craftsman's examination.

Toni Bortoluzzi is married, has four children and lives in Affoltern am Albis.
