Kathy Riklin (born October 21, 1952 in Zurich ; entitled to live there, Bremgarten and Ernetschwil ) is a Swiss politician ( CVP ).

Life

Riklin attended the ancient language-humanistic grammar school in Zurich and studied geology and geography at the ETH Zurich from 1972 to 1977 . She was an assistant at the ETH and did fieldwork in Valmalenco and Adamello in northern Italy. In 1982 she received her doctorate. sc. nat. ETH. From 1983 to 2008 she worked full-time as a grammar school teacher and prorector of the cantonal maturity school for adults . From 2008 to 2015 she was a member of the Zurich University Council .

Political career

From 1982 to 2001 Riklin was in the city council (parliament) of the city of Zurich , which she presided over in 2000/2001. From 1993 to 2004 she also presided over the Federal Nature and Heritage Protection Commission (ENKH). In the Swiss parliamentary elections in 1999 she was elected to the National Council. In 2007 she ran unsuccessfully for the Council of States . In September 2013, Riklin was approached by a Blick journalist in the parliament building about the "Mörgeli Cause" around Christoph Mörgeli . She said that "it doesn't look good for Mörgeli", who had been dismissed a year earlier as senior assistant and conservator at the Medical History Institute of the University of Zurich. Thereupon Mörgeli reported to Riklin. In the first instance she was acquitted of the allegations of violation of official secrecy. The Bernese Higher Court saw it differently and convicted Riklin for violating official secrecy. The Federal Supreme Court upheld this judgment on March 7, 2016.

Riklin was a member of the Foreign Policy Commission and the Commission for Science, Education and Culture, which she presided over in 2006/2007. She was a member of the delegation for relations with the German Bundestag (President 2011–2015) and the EFTA / European Parliament (President 2014–2015), is co-founder of the Parliamentary Group on Digital Sustainability and was co-President of the Parliamentary Group on Climate Change and Peacebuilding . Riklin ran again in 2019 for the National Council for the CSV , a sub-group of the CVP.

Political priorities

Riklin is committed to education and research, especially to strengthen the natural sciences and computer science. Other important political priorities are foreign policy (especially Europe and international cooperation), the planning of the subsurface and the use of geothermal energy , global warming, nature and environmental protection and cultural policy.

Activities and mandates

Riklin sits on the board of SwissICT and is president of the VERA forum , which, regardless of the further fate of the use of nuclear energy, advocates the technically safe disposal of radioactive waste. She presides over the OcCC ( Organe consultatif sur les changements climatiques), which formulates strategic recommendations on questions of climate change and on Swiss climate policy from a scientific perspective. In addition, Riklin presides over the Foundation 3R Competence Center Switzerland (3RCC), which promotes the 3R principles of replacement, reduction and refine of animal experiments. Since 2004 Riklin has presided over the winter aid of the Canton of Zurich. Riklin is also involved in various cultural and art associations and foundations.
