In April 2008, she handed over the presidential office of the cantonal FDP to Beat Walti . This as an admission of their personal defeat when the FDP Zurich unsuccessfully supported Ueli Maurer from the SVP in the 2007 election to the Council of States . During her presidency, several cantonal popular initiatives were launched, including " Easy Swiss Tax " for a radical redesign of the tax system , which the FDP Switzerland adopted as a core demand.

In January 2012, Fiala was elected President of the Swiss AIDS Federation. In March 2012 it was announced that she would receive compensation of 50,000 francs per year for a 20 percent workload. The amount of this amount met with criticism, including from the Zewo Foundation , which awards the seal of approval for charitable organizations. However, the board of the Swiss AIDS Federation supported Fiala. Fiala reduced her compensation to CHF 30,000 so that the continuation of the Zewo seal of approval for Aids-Hilfe Schweiz was not jeopardized any further. She held the office until 2014.

At the end of April 2013, allegations of plagiarism were raised in relation to Fiala's thesis for a Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) at ETH Zurich . You have taken numerous sentences from Wikipedia and other sources without quoting correctly. Fiala admitted that she was "sloppy" with certain sources, but she was not a fraud. ETH Zurich commissioned an expert to prepare an expert report. A critical examination of the work was also published in May 2013 on VroniPlag Wiki . In July 2013, ETH Zurich withdrew Fiala the MAS title because it had taken over parts of the text verbatim without correct information in the footnotes. She acted negligently at work and clearly violated the rules of scientific work. However, she was not accused of fraudulent intent, she was allowed to write a new paper on a different topic.

From 2017 to 2020 she was President of the FDP Women Switzerland , her successor was Susanne Vincenz-Stauffacher .

Fiala was married to chemical engineer Jan Fiala until his death in 2019, with whom she has three adult children. She lives in Zurich.
