The École hôtelière de Lausanne ( EHL ) is a hotel management school in Switzerland , which is regarded as the best institution in its domain worldwide. She teaches students whose goal is to embark on a management career in the hotel and hospitality industry. The campus is located in Le Chalet-à-Gobet , eight kilometers from the center of Lausanne . In 2013 the school taught over 2,600 students from 107 different countries. EHL is a member of the EHL Group, which was founded in 2015 and is dedicated to management training in the hospitality industry.

history

The École hôtelière de Lausanne was founded in 1893 by Jacques Tschumi. It was opened at the end of the 19th century during the tourism boom in Switzerland as a reaction to the high demand for trained and qualified staff.

There has been an EMBA program since 2001 , a degree in hospitality management from the University of Applied Sciences in Western Switzerland (HES-SO).

education

It prepares students in this field for leading international positions with four programs:

  • The Bachelor of Science in International Hospitality Management (taught in English or French), which includes a year of preparation for getting to know the hospitality industry, three years of courses in business management subjects, two six-month internships (often completed abroad) and a 10-week consulting assignment
  • The Master of Science in Global Hospitality Business, a three semester program in collaboration with the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the University of Houston, with courses in Lausanne (Switzerland), Hong Kong (China) and Houston (United States)
  • The Executive MBA in Hospitality Administration, a 12-month graduate program in Hotel and Hospitality Management
  • The Master Class in Culinary Arts, a six month certificate program that focuses on the advanced aspects of the culinary arts, such as international cuisine, dining, and baking

The EHL offers financial support to gifted students who cannot afford the fees due to financial difficulties.

There are several training restaurants on the EHL campus for students in the preparatory year. It also has bars, 48 ​​classrooms, auditoriums, a library, study rooms, a wine tasting room, a cafeteria, a boutique, a historic building, sports facilities and student dormitories.

The EHL has implemented various sustainability initiatives such as a waste disposal system, a vegetable garden, a heat recovery system for the cold store, solar panels and two electric cars on campus.

In 2013, the EHL started a project to further develop the campus through a cooperative exchange of ideas, in which 385 architecture and landscape architecture students from all over the world took part. The preparation of the work began in autumn 2016 and it should be completed within four years. The cost of the project is estimated at CHF 226 million.

Approvals

Candidates for the Bachelor program are selected after an examination of their application material and an online assessment with analytical and quantitative tests, a hospitality aptitude test and an online job interview. If the application is accepted, the candidates will be invited to a selection day.

Accreditations

The École hôtelière de Lausanne is accredited as a higher education institution by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC, USA). This accreditation guarantees that the institution meets international standards for higher education and enables the transfer of funds and recognition of the degree by American institutions.

In Switzerland, this is the only hotel school that offers training in connection with the University of Applied Sciences Western Switzerland (HES-SO), which stands for high teaching quality and whose qualifications are protected by Swiss law.

The Executive MBA in Hospitality Administration program has been recognized by the Swiss Agency for Accreditation and Quality Assurance in Higher Education (AAQ) as it meets their quality standards.

Rankings

According to a 2007, 2010 and 2013 study by Taylor Nelson Sofres of hospitality managers and HR professionals, the EHL is considered the best in the world for graduate placement in international hospitality.

In 2013 and 2014, EHL was named the best hospitality management school in the international “Worldwide Hospitality Awards” competition.

Faculty and Research

Since 2014, the EHL Research Center, in collaboration with STR , has been striving to become the best source of information in the field of international hospitality. The chair for food and drinks has been investigating the changes and challenges in the restaurant industry since 2010.

The college staff includes gastronomy experts, including some Meilleurs Ouvriers de France (MOF).

Cooperation with industry

EHL integrates market trends and new technologies into its teaching through cooperation projects with companies . The Student Business Projects allow companies to hire a team of students on a full-time basis on a topic for which they need a solution.

Every year students can take part in the Career Fair on campus and get to know potential employers for internships or permanent positions.

In 2012, a business incubator was established to support startups looking to set up a hospitality business.

EHL has set up an International Advisory Board , made up of international executives from the hospitality and education sectors, which gives the school the opportunity to benefit from direct feedback and industry experience.

Partnerships

Via its subsidiary Lausanne Hospitality Consulting (LHC), the EHL Group offers consulting services and manager training from its branches in Switzerland, China and India. LHC has developed a network of certified schools to accredit institutions when they become top notch. So far, the following schools have been awarded the EHL certificate:

In November 2013, EHL acquired the Swiss School of Tourism and Hospitality (SSTH) in Passugg, Switzerland, which teaches tourism, gastronomy and the hospitality industry.

Graduates

The EHL Alumni Association (AEHL) was founded in 1926. In the first few years of its existence, nearly 500 former students joined it. Today the AEHL supports a network of 25,000 active members in 120 countries.
