Thomas Hardegger (born April 2, 1956 in Zurich ) is a Swiss entrepreneur and politician ( SP Canton Zurich ). He was Mayor of Rümlang from 2006 to 2018 and National Councilor from 2011 to 2019 .

Thomas Hardegger trained as a high school teacher after completing his compulsory schooling. Between 1982 and 2000 he taught at the secondary school in Rümlang. Since 2000 he has been working independently as managing director and chairman of the board of directors of Hardegger Immobilien AG in Rümlang.

Hardegger was a member of the Zurich Constitutional Council between 2000 and 2005 . Between 2001 and 2011 he sat for the SP in the Zurich Cantonal Council . At the same time, he has been the local councilor of Rümlang since 2002 , and from 2006 to 2018 he was mayor . He prevailed in a fight against the competitor of the SVP and was confirmed in office in 2010 and 2014. From 2010 to 2018, he represented the Dielsdorf district in the executive committee of the Association of Mayors of the Canton of Zurich, where he was particularly involved in the social and health departments.

Since 2004 he has been a member of the leading committee of the Association for the Protection of the Population around Zurich Airport (sbfz), since 2014 as President. Hardegger is vice president of the Casafair association (formerly the house association) and is also a member of the board of the Association of Swiss Housing Cooperatives . Hardegger is President of the Swiss Pedestrian Association, on the board of the Veloinitiative Association and a member of the Alpine Council of the Alpine Initiative .

He ran for both the National Council and the Council of States in the 2011 national elections . On October 23, 2011, he was elected to the National Council as a representative of the Zurich SP delegation. In the election of the Council of States he reached fourth place in the first ballot behind the two incumbent Councilors of States Verena Diener and Felix Gutzwiller and the challenger Christoph Blocher . He did not run for the second ballot. In the National Council, Hardegger was a member of the KVF (Commission for Transport and Telecommunications) and the GPK (Business Audit Commission). He was also involved in the fields of health, energy, public service and construction. In the elections in 2019 he was not re-elected.
