Daniel Frei (born February 5, 1979 in Zurich ) is a Swiss politician of the Green Liberal Party (GLP). He was elected to the National Council for the Social Democratic Party of Switzerland (SP) , to which he has been a member since December 2018 and is a member of the Security Commission. On May 29, 2019, he moved from the SP to the GLP.

Life

Daniel Frei attended primary and secondary school in Niederglatt and graduated from the Zürcher Unterland canton school with a type B Matura . He then completed a degree in political science as well as international and constitutional law at the universities of Zurich and Bonn , from which he graduated with a licentiate . From 2012 to 2018 he worked as an integration officer in Opfikon . Since 2018 he has been working as manager of the social services association for the Dielsdorf district .

Frei lives with the Zurich SP Cantonal Councilor Claudia Wyssen and five children in Uster .

politics

Since 1999 Frei was a member of the SP District Dielsdorf, in which he was active as a board member from 1999 and President from 2004 to 2012. At the same time he was president of the SP Unteres Glattal from 1999 to 2004. From 2004 to 2008 he worked as party secretary at the SP Canton Zurich, from 2008 to 2012 as general secretary. He then took over the presidency of the SP Canton of Zurich in 2012. In 2017 he resigned prematurely as party president due to the conflict between government councilor Mario Fehr and the party, as this meant that he could no longer carry out the office as he saw fit.

At the municipal level, Daniel Frei was the school caretaker of the Niederglatt primary school and the Niederhasli-Niederglatt-Hofstetten secondary school from 2002 to 2010. Then from 2010 to 2018 municipal council in Niederhasli (security and social director). In this function he presided over the police association Rümlang-Oberglatt-Niederhasli-Niederglatt (RONN). To this end, he was a member of the board of the Dielsdorf district social services association.

Frei was assigned to the right wing of the SP. During the swearing-in ceremony, Frei was dubbed “ Juso- Schreck” by the Aargauer Zeitung .

In 2014, Daniel Frei was elected to the Zurich Cantonal Council, where he was first a member of the Commission for Justice and the State and then the Business Audit Commission. He was sworn in as a National Councilor on December 10, 2018, which is why he resigned from the Cantonal Council. He moved up for Chantal Galladé . In the National Council he is a member of the Security Policy Commission. On May 29, 2019, he and his wife turned their backs on the SP and joined the Green Liberal Party .
