Mario Fehr (born September 13, 1958 in Zurich ; resident in Adliswil and Küsnacht ) is a Swiss politician ( SP ).

biography

Mario Fehr studied law. He was a member of the municipal council in the Zurich suburb of Adliswil from 1986 to 1994 and from 1994 was city councilor and head of department for youth, leisure and sport. In autumn 2009 he announced his resignation from the Adliswil City Council at the end of January 2010. From 1991 to 2000 he was a member of the Cantonal Council of Zurich and from 2000 to 2005 he was a member of the Zurich Constitutional Council. In the 1999 Swiss parliamentary elections , he moved to the National Council , where he became President of the Parliamentary Group for Tibet . In the 2011 elections , Fehr, now a member of the government, gave up his mandate as a national councilor and did not run again.

From 1992 to 2008 Fehr was a teacher at the Technical Vocational School in Zurich. From 2006 to 2011 he was President of KV Switzerland .

On April 3, 2011, he was elected to succeed Markus Notter with 137,035 votes (the best result of all candidates) in the Zurich Government Council, where he took over the security department. In 2016/2017 he was President of the Government Council.

Through the publications of Wikileaks it became known that the Zurich canton police had acquired surveillance software ( Trojans ) without the corresponding legal basis . In the summer of 2015, the Young Socialists filed a criminal complaint against Mario Fehr as head of the security department. Mario Fehr then suspended his membership in the Social Democrats until the complaint was no longer followed up in November 2015.

Fehr is also criticized for promising in the vote for a new police and justice center that the police will clear the barracks in downtown Zurich. However, with reference to the need for additional space, the government council decided that cantonal police units should remain on the barracks area .
