Barbara Schaffner (born July 28, 1968 in Zurich ) is a Swiss politician , energy expert and physicist . She's Canton councilor of the Green Liberal Party in Zurich and Municipal President of Otelfingen .

biography

Schaffner grew up in Anglikon in the canton of Aargau . In 1988 she was an exchange student on a farm in Wyoming . After studying physics with a doctorate in medical physics at the ETH Zurich and the Paul Scherrer Institute , she completed a postdoc at the National Institute of Radiological Sciences in Chiba, Japan. From 2000 to 2008 she worked at Varian Medical Systems as a specialist in proton therapy and researched algorithms in radiation therapy . At the ETH, Schaffner completed a Master of Energy Science and Technology, worked as a project manager for solar power plants and, as an energy expert, is the managing director of her company eneba GmbH. As managing director and board member, she heads the non-partisan networking group Zurich renewable. Association for energy efficiency and renewable energies .

In addition, as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Mühle Otelfingen Foundation , she is committed to preserving the historic building and using it for cultural events. She has two children with her long-time partner, Paul Eggimann.

politics

In 2011, Schaffner was elected to the Zurich Cantonal Council for the Dielsdorf district. Since then she has been part of the Commission for Transport, Energy and Environment . From 2011 to 2013 she was also a member of the Planning and Construction Commission . In the Cantonal Council, she is primarily committed to renewable energies and public transport. But she was also noticed with a successful attempt to prevent the disappearance of native cancers.

In July 2018, Otelfingen's electorate elected Schaffner as mayor. In 2019, with the committee No to the Harmful Water Act, she was one of the driving forces that sank the new Water Act in the Canton of Zurich in a referendum vote, arguing above all with environmental and flood protection as well as the additional bureaucratic effort for municipalities. In the glp she heads the national energy working group and is president of the glp Unteres Furttal. In the parliamentary elections on October 20, 2019 , Schaffner was elected to the National Council for the first time for the green liberals .
