National Institute of Radiological Sciences
The National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS, English for "National Institute of Radiological Sciences"; Japanese 放射線 医学 総 合 研究所 , Hōshasen Igaku Sōgō Kenkyūjo , dt. About: "Verbund Research Institute for Radiation Medicine ") is the largest radiation medicine research facility in Japan . It was founded in 1957 and is located in the Inage district of Chiba , in the immediate vicinity of Chiba University . The institute has been organized as a self-governing body since 2001 under the supervision of the Japanese Ministry of Culture and Technology , from which it is largely financed.
Various research facilities for radiology , nuclear medicine and radiation biology are located on a 400 by 200 meter campus . The radiation therapy division has a hospital and a heavy ion accelerator that is used to treat cancer. There are joint research projects with universities and institutes in various Asian and European countries.
In Hitachinaka , NIRS operates a marine radio- ecology facility .
