On the national cooperation platform e-rara.ch , digitized public domain prints from the 15th to 20th centuries from Swiss libraries are made available online free of charge.

Goals and content

"The platform has the following goals:

  • Coordinated digitization of prints from the 15th to 20th centuries from Swiss libraries according to uniform quality standards
  • Central import of digitized material and bibliographic metadata into the platform
  • Persistent referencing of electronic documents using DOI
  • Presentation of the content on a common platform "

The platform was launched in 2010. Currently, around 64,000 titles are available (as of February 2018), including prints, maps, graphics and music.

As part of the project “e-rara.ch: Re-use for science - the path to full text” (e-rara.ch for short: full text), the platform was expanded to include text recognition (OCR) . The focus was on Antiqua typefaces with a year of publication from 1830, these can now be searched in full text. "

E-rara.ch is experiencing great growth through the DigiTUR digitization project of the Zurich Central Library, which digitizes important parts of the historical and cultural heritage of the city and the canton of Zurich.

Participating libraries

Basel University Library , University Library Bern , Library of Geneva , ETH-Bibliothek Zurich and Zurich Central Library operate the platform together. The ETH library is responsible for overall coordination and technical operation. Thirteen other libraries from all over Switzerland (as of November 2017) contribute with their holdings to the continuous expansion of the available content. In principle, all Swiss libraries can participate in e-rara.ch.

Development of the platform (2008–2012)

The platform was set up as part of the Swiss innovation and cooperation program e-lib.ch: Swiss Electronic Library , which is also responsible for e-codices and Kartenportal.CH. Cooperation partners in the project were the current platform operators.

The original aim was to offer the 16th century Swiss prints available in Swiss libraries online and for free use. We worked directly with the VD 16 project. In the course of the first four years, additional content (Swiss prints from the 17th to 19th centuries, selected thematic focuses) was added continuously. The partners set up their own digitization centers as well as corresponding workflows and know-how. Compliance with high quality standards for scans and cataloging has always been a central goal.

Work will continue in the future to further develop the platform and make it even more user-friendly. The technical basis of the platform is the Visual Library software solution .
