structure

The Bern University Library consists of 29 branch libraries. The Münstergasse library (the former central library or Bern city and university library, StUB) is the oldest branch library of the UB. The historic building at Münstergasse 61–63, which houses the Münstergasse library of the UB and the Bern Burger Library , was extensively renovated from 2014 to April 2016 and adapted to the needs of modern library operations. It is considered to be the oldest non-church library building in Switzerland.

The Bühlplatz Departmental Library (FBB, opened in 1981) became the Medicine Library in 2019. The libraries for biology, geology, chemistry and biochemistry have been the Muesmatt library since 2019. The Legal Library (JBB) was opened in 1990 in the main building of the University of Bern. The basic library Unitobler (BTO, opened 1993) offers in its open access area basic and study literature on humanities, social sciences and theological subjects. The BTO is located in the basement of the former Chocolat Tobler factory building . Together with the Lerchenweg library and the area's institute library, the BTO forms the Unitobler libraries. The vonRoll library (BvR) was opened in 2013 on the industrial site in Bern's Muesmatt, which the von Roll company had given up in 1997. The BvR is the library for the social sciences and the Phil-hum faculty of the university and the library for the PH Bern (University of Education). The Mittelstrasse library (opened in 2018) is the sub-library of the UB for archeology, art history, music and theater studies, gender studies and sustainable development. The library for social, preventive and family medicine PHC of the university library is located in the same building (a former administration building of the SBB ).

The Swiss East European Library (SOB) became a branch of the then StUB in 1997. The SOB specializes in documenting the history, society and politics of Eastern Europe in the 20th and 21st centuries. It also houses the "Rossica Europeana", a valuable special collection of printed matter, maps and graphics on Russia from a (Western) European perspective (16th – 19th centuries).
